Corrosion inhibitors for application in carbonated mortars
The application of inhibitors is one possible technique for corrosion protection of steel rebars in carbonated concrete. The paper shows the results of a preliminary study concerning the evaluation of the inhibiting action of some organic substances, both in synthetic solutions, simulating the pore electrolyte in carbonated concrete, and in carbonated mortars. Specimens were cut from AISI 1033 rods (nominal composition: C = 0.3%; S = 0.03%; P < 0.01%; Si = 0.04%; Mn = 0.96%; Ni = 0.2%; Cu = 0.02%; Al = 0.07%; balance Fe), used as concrete reinforcement. Among the different substances tested (benzoate derivatives, polyhydroxylated compounds, saturated dicarboxylic acids, 3-acryl derivatives, dicyclohexylammonium nitrite), many of them inhibited efficiently the corrosion process in synthetic solutions, but only dicyclohexylammonium nitrite afforded an inhibitive action in carbonated mortars.
