A remote reading system for gas and water meters
As early as ten years ago Italgas did recognize the importance of applying remote meter reading not only for large-volume gas consumers, but also for houshold gas users. Consequently, since the late 80's Italgas has been spending a great deal of effort into a research program aimed at finding the most efficient solution for remote meter reading. The solution advocated by Italgas was obtained under the assumption that the equipment to be installed should offer not only provisions for meter reading, but also for a number of additional value-added services that the user may be interested to acquire and that can increase the returns from the investment. As a consequence of this choice, meter reading should not be done ba a portable equipment, but rather by using a fixed communication network. Therefore, the remote reading system concerned comprises equipment for automatic transfer of meter data to the billing center: via radio from the meter to a concentrator and via telephone from the concentrator to the billing center. This report is divided into 3 sections, covering system architecture, electrical characteristics and description of a practical field test.
