Roof covering for the open air theatre, Bilkent University Ankara
The tensile roof structure to cover the existing Open Air Theatre of the Bilkent Universtiy in Ankara is described. The design of a wide span truss structure, considering the limited support conditions of the arena building, was the key problem that had to be solved. The primary steel structure consists of the main trussed arch. The trussed girders are rigidly connected with the main arch and pin jointed at the foundation. The membrane roof consists of 7 individual membrane panels spanning between the curved girder trusses. The surface of the membrane is anticlastically curved to take up wind and snow loads. Due to the large size of the membrane a very strong PVC coated Polyester fabric was required. The chosen quality is the so called type V material. Each anticlastic curved membrane of the seven fields is fabricated from flat unstressed patterned panels with seams made by high-frequency welding. The cable net spans between the main arch and is tensioned with two tie down cables to the roof of the existing building.
