Corrosion behavior of reinforcing steel in concrete with cement kiln dust (CKD) blended cement
OPC CKD Slag blended cements were studied as an attempt to replace OPC (ordinary portland cement) with environmentally friendly materials that they lead to a durable concrete. For a given slag content of 50 % the addition of up to 15% CKD appears to be the optimum replacement for OPC both for mechanical and durability properties. OPC CKD Slag blends made with 5 % or 15 % CKD and 25% slag and blends with 15 % CKD and 50 % slag exhibit the same resistance in corrosion as the OPC blends and much better than OPC alone. OPC CKD Slag blends with 15%CKD and 50% Slag developed a finer pore structure when compared to OPC pastes. The analysis of the pore size distribution seems to proof that the simultaneous enhancement of strength and resistance in corrosion for OPC CKD Slag blends is directly related to a reduction of the relative volume of the pores greater than 0.05gm and the increase in relative volume of smaller pores less than 0.05gm.
