In US Patent 6207593, John R Fields describes roofing and waterproofing membranes that are essentially polyester support sheets coated with asphalt. The process produces a strong and more durable sheet than those conventionally used. The asphalt is delivered into the coater through feed lines and an application nozzle. It is applied to the upper surface of the base fabric by the nozzle and to the lower surface by the lower metering roller in a bath. The asphalt, styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS) copolymer rubber, is heated to about 177 - 232 deg C and applied in a thickness of 0.5-1.5 mm to a base fabric. As the sheet passes further down the line it is allowed to cool on drums and a finish looper and its width is checked to ensure there is no more than an acceptable degree of necking. The next step is to apply lines for guidance during installation. This is done at a marking station using either a while latex paint or some other marking agent. The nip rollers were adjusted to ensure even coating and to prevent any substrate fibres appearing. The sheet was allowed to cool at ambient temperature of 18 - 22 deg C for about one minute.
