Cables, fittings and anchors data bank. Passive anchors for tensile structures
The construction of lightweight structures often requires the anchoring of tensioned members to the ground. The available solutions are active anchors with permanent pre-stressing and passive anchors, which only act against the soil when the load is applied. Passive anchors move more than active anchors, but they are simpler and involve fewer problems of relaxation and durability. They have not, however, been well documented and no general design method has been drawn up to facilitate their application. The object of this paper is to provide a suitable method and information for incorporating passive anchors in design. Passive anchoring is used frequently in building (tensile and suspended roofs, pneumatic structures, mobile homes, tensioned foundations, etc.), civil engineering (bridges, off-shore platforms, earth-pressure retaining structures), energy transportation and communication networks (tie anchors, broadcasting tower foundations, antennas, etc.), military engineering (tents, landing membranes, aircraft and vessel mooring), and in other applications. The author gives a typology of passive anchors and describes their behaviour with respect to their uplift capacity. Design methods for passive anchors and installation procedures are outlined.
