Safety factors and materials design allowables for FRP composites - Application to civil infrastructure
Although fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are increasingly being used for the renewal of civil infrastructure, there is to date lack of a comprehensive effort to determine and specify adequate factors of safety. In a number of cases, primary structural elements are designed and built using factors of safety that are significantly lower than those used in the automotive, marine, and aerospace areas, even though the expected service life is longer. This paper reviews materials allowables and factors of safety from a number of areas, as a means of providing an efficient comparison of the level of understanding of this critical topic. The concept of damage tolerance and use of design predicated on the effect of defects is discussed.
