GFRP tubes for pile/column applications for bridges
Corrosion problem associated with steel and reinforced concrete forced researchers and engineers to search for an alternate material such as Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) for bridges. The GFRP tube filled with concrete seems to be a good alternate to address this problem. The GFRP tube can be engineered to provide sufficient confinement to filled concrete and to increase the capacity of the section in shear and compressive strength and also provide increased resistance to earth quake forces. This paper deals with the testing, proto-typing and field-testing of these GFRP tubes filled with concrete.
