Vibration-based structural health monitoring of civil infrastructures
This paper firstly presents an overview of civil infrastructures and their problems in Japan, and discusses characteristic features of structural health monitoring of civil infrastructures. The focus of the discussion is placed an bridges in the transportation system. In the second place, research and development of vibration-based health monitoring systems at the Bridge and Structure Laboratory of the University of Tokyo is presented. Ambient vibration based approaches for Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) and long span suspension bridges show possible wide applications in this field. In both cases, although the excitation is unknown, densely distributed and accurate measurement is shown to provide valuable information an the Status of structures. Especially, a LDV based approach can provide information an damage and loading to the structure with practically applicable system configuration. A smart material system with embedded piezoelectric materials shows high potential to monitor structural status.
