On the influence of the modulus of elasticity of coarse aggregate on the modulus of elasticity of high performance concrete
After an inventory of the types of coarse aggregate available in the market of a certain region, seven different samples of aggregates and respective parent rocks were obtained. Compressive strength, porosity and modulus of elasticity of those rocks were determined in laboratory. The same was done to seven high strength concrete, with compressive strength at 28 days ranging from 87 to 137 MPa and W/C ratio ranging from 0.21 to 0.30. Concrete mixtures were prepared using as coarse aggregate the same (crushed) rocks. Additional determinations of the same properties were done to a comparative mortar , made with the same materials and with a similar proportion to that of the mortal parcel of concrete. Mixtures studied consisted of concrete with silica fume and superplasticizer, used to reduce the mix water, concrete workability remaining constant. Tests were carried out following international standards. The analysis of the data obtained confirms a strong influence of the modulus of elasticity of coarse aggregate in the modulus of elasticity of high strength concrete, but reveals that other factors are also important.
