Strengthening of reinforced concrete structures using FRP systems: an Australian perspective
Strengthening of reinforced concrete structures using FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) materials is a rapidly developing field. These techniques have established themselves as a most viable alternative in many situations where reinforced concrete structures require strengthening. While significant research remains to be done, the technology is significantly well proven for it to be considered for general use. However, it is essential that all parties playing roles in such projects clearly understand the intent and detail of the project requirements. Fibre composite materials have significant advantages over alternative materials, but are relatively unforgiving of poor workmanship and lack of knowledge. This paper has identified the key aspects of the process suggested for Australia. It is anticipated that more standard procedures for both design and installation will be developed over the next several years.
