Effect of fillers on the properties of photocured partex surface using epoxy acrylate oligomer
Partex, which is produced from jute sticks and urea formaldehyde resin, can be used as a good substitute for particleboard in Bangladesh. The structure of partex can be destroyed within a short period of time. Epoxy acrylate coatings on partex surface can solve these drawbacks. Addition of fillers to the formulation can improve the properties of the cured surfaces. In the present work, CaCO3 and sand (SiO2) were used as fillers. The present investigation is related to modification of the surface of the partex in the presence of different fillers, CaCO3 and SiO2, which were mainly used as the promoters of different physical properties of the cured surface. Epoxydiacrylate (EB-600) was used as an oligomer in the curing process and the monomer trimethylol propane triacrylate (TMPTA). Thin films were prepared on glass plate with these formulations and finally applied on polished partex surface and both were cured under UV radiation. Radiation intensities, expressed by number of passes were optimized to the extent of pendulum hardness (PH) and gel content. The properties of cured partex surface such as PH, gloss - both at 60 and 20 deg angles, macro and micro scratch hardness, adhesion strength of the coatings, and abrasion resistance were studied as a function of the concentration of fillers. The base coating containing 4 % CaCO3 and 3 % SiO2 showed the best performance amongst all of them.
