Due to settlements becoming more and more densely populated, as well as to improvements at speed and frequency in modern transport systems, there is an increasing influence of railway traffic induced vibrations onto the neighbouring buildings and residential areas. On the other hand, there are regulatory attempts, to reduce the admissible limits for vibrations drastically. Based on this situation there is a significant need for reassessment and rehabilation measures of exting buildings. A possible retrofit measure of interest consists of placing a small building (garage, garden home, etc). as an isolator of noise, as well as of vibrations, in temps of amplitude and frequency. The aim of the present study ist to evaluate this idea of isolation by secondary buildings and to quantify the vibration reductions they can provide for a selected range of parameters (distance, dimensions, depth, etc.). The preliminary results obtained with two-dimensional models are presentend and discussed in the paper.
