UV-curing resins based on renewable raw materials
The state-of-the-art of renewable raw materials used in UV-curing systems are reviewed and further possibilities for applications in the coatings industry are presented. Radiation-cured coating systems are generally formulated with a reactive resin and, optionally, a low-viscosity reactive diluent. A photoinitiator is added to guarantee an immediate curing upon exposure to UV light. The formulation is complete by addition of additives, pigments and fillers. Reactive resins discussed include epoxidised fatty oils and their derivatives (epoxidized soybean and linseed oils), aliphatic epoxides and polyols, acrylated linseed and soybean oils, polyols (glycerol, sorbitol, carbohydrates) and polycarboxylic acids made from renewable materials (azelaic acid, sebacic acid from caster oil). The properties, structures and cross-linking mechanisms of the different materials are discussed.
