Non-conventional processing technologies are presented which allow unique properties in VOC compliant coatings. RC acrylic emulsions offer near Newtonian flow characteristics, high gloss and DOI, matching solvent-borne alkyds and surpassing conventional acrylic emulsions, with solution-like viscosity at both high and low shear rates, excellent flow and leveling, in both industrial and brush application, ease of paint manufacturing, good freeze/thaw-, pH induced viscosity-stability and solvent shock resistance so less rejects. Solid Grade Oligomers (SGO), acrylic resins made via the continuous SGO process, are unmatched in consistency and efficiency. Combined with recent new polyurethane and new self cross linking technology development they will allow for new emulsions that show significant improvement in resistant and excel in aesthetic requirements. The products have been developed for furniture, joinery and flat stock wood substrates. The paper will discuss the relationship between polymer technology and the final application and film properties.
