In Brazil's Northeast region, electrical energy (chiefly hydroelectric, though other alternative sources are sought) is fundamental for the implementation of development policies of human and social scope, and for rebalancing inequalities between regions. Another major priority for local populations in this region is irrigation. Complementarity between different uses of water - energy generation and irrigation in particular - is therefore essential for development here; conflictive uses of this precious resource will be detrimental to all.
