A rheological study of associating polymer-particle interactions in tricalcium silicate pastes
Cement pastes are used in various conditions of fluidity. This leads to the necessary introduction of polymers in order to control the rheology and to stabilize the slurry against segregation. This work describes the influence of hydrophobically modified acrylate polyelectrolytes on the rheological behavior of a tricalcium silicate paste at a constant solid volume ratio. As the polymer concentration increases, the insoluble polymer first precipitates on the granular network, reinforcing the granular network structure. Beyond 1 wt%, the polymer becomes soluble. It adsorbs on the grains surface and induces steric repulsive forces due to the pendant chains along the polyacrylate backbone. The suspension is unstable towards sedimentation. At higher concentrations, a network of hydrophobic links forms in the interstitial solution and the rheology of the paste is that of a transient (ie non-crosslinked) polymer gel reinforced by the solid tricalcium silicate particles.
