Innovative graffiti-protection: VOC-free penetrating anti-graffiti systems based on organofunctional silanes
Graffiti is a unwanted artwork distributed over the whole world. The financial damage caused by illegal graffiti is extraordinary high. In this article conventional anti-graffiti systems (wax and PUR-coating systems) are compared with a new environmentally friendly VOC-free penetrating anti-graffiti system based on organofunctional silanes, before and after a graffiti attack. Profiles visualized the advantages of this new anti-graffiti system. The vapour permeability is guaranteed and no optical disadvantages occurred. The strong repellency effect of spray paints on the low surface energy system (anti-graffiti system) facilitates the removal of the paint and frustrate the painters. Whereas the surface of a brickwork darkens due to ingress of wax after several cleaning cycles, no disadvantages are observed for the silane-based system. Therefore, the recently introduced, patented organofunctional silane systems for preventive graffiti protection offer new perspectives for permanent graffiti protection. The combination of UV-stable and weather resistant permanent graffiti protection, nearly invisible surface modification, extraordinary high water vapour permeability, easy and environmental friendly because VOC-free, water born application as well as the very good functionality is presently achieved only by this system.
