High performance dispersing additives for pigment concentrates
Additives are becoming more technical, with greater contribution to the value of the final part. Masterbatch formulations are widely used today, removing the need for precision weighing and metering of small amounts of additives. This permits more simple manufacturing conditions with wider processing windows. The use of colour masterbatches avoids fine dusty pigment powders. Dispersing agents are essential for the production of pigment masterbatches. They guarantee a homogeneous distribution of pigments. The main requirement of dispersing agents is to provide high efficiency in suppressing agglomerates. These environmentally friendly colour concentrates guarantee precise metering and easy handling. For pigment masterbatches the main target is high and constant colour yield, smooth processing and improved downstream properties. This paper presents the influence of the dispersing additives based on amphiphilic materials for fine distribution of organic pigments. To evaluate the efficiency of these additives, several test methods commonly used in the industry were applied to different types of pigments. Results from colour strength measurements, filter pressure tests and speck evaluation in film application will be presented.
