Design of the apex joint of a cold-formed steel portal frame
It is well-known that galvanised cold-formed steel portal frames can be a viable alternative to conventional hot-rolled steel construction for frames of spans of up to 18 m. For such frames, however, joints that not only have the requisite strength but which are also both simple to fabricate and easy to erect on site are required. In this paper, a combination of laboratory tests and finite element analyses will be used to provide guidance for the design of the apex joint of a cold-formed steel portal frame. The joints of the frame in question are formed through brackets, bolted between the webs of the cold-formed steel sections used for the rafter members of the frame, and fail through buckling of the stiffened free-edge. For the section size used for the cold-formed steel channel-section, it will be demonstrated that joints formed through such brackets can be designed to carry the full moment-capacity of the cold-formed steel sections being connected.
