Special impregnation of alumina bricks to increase the alkali resistance
Due to a newly developed impregnating treatment of fired alumina and high-alumina bricks, it is possible to significantly increase their resistance to volatile constituents of the kiln atmosphere (alkalis, chlorides, sulphates and their reaction products) without impairing the thermo-mechanical properties of the base material. The open pore space left after brick burning is filled with refractory, oxidic material thus putting a 'reaction stop' to the aggressive media. While the SiO2-rich reaction zone of silicon carbide containing refractories begins to melt down under oxidizing conditions due to the high reactivity at temperatures of more than 1200 deg C, impregnated high-alumina bricks can be used efficiently even in the hot zones of the cement plant (feed end housing, rotary kiln, firing hood and cooler).
