A concurrent engineering implementation for safety door manufacturing
A methodology is implemented for concurrent engineering of safety doors at a commercial company, based on designing the assembled product in 3D using fully parametric features and constraints. Three more disciplines are amalgamated in the methodology presented, i.e. manufacturing costing, product quality evaluation and CNC program generation. Manufacturing costing is catered for by associating with each feature cost model equations, as distilled from the company accounting system. Product quality is evaluated by using finite element analysis with 'standardized' loading conditions and by obtaining the resulting deformation at particular positions of the door construct. CNC programs for a punching machine are also derived automatically from the parametric geometry representation. Punch forms and nibbling profiles are parametrically attached to hole geometry. The key to integration with downstream modules is design variables, which control the size, shape and configuration of the product. The above functions are performed on different software systems and the current challenge is to integrate them as much as possible.
