Behavior of concretes with shrinkage reducing admixtures
Shrinkage reducing admixtures (SRAs) for concrete have recently been introduced in the market and are gaining popularity. The present paper summarizes the results of an extensive study of concretes with SRAs where their effect on the autogenous and drying shrinkage of concrete, in addition to basic and drying creep, is evaluated. The evolution of the compressive strength and other mechanical properties has also been studied. The results of the study indicate a slight decrease in some mechanical properties, such as compressive strength, due to the incorporation of these admixtures. On the other hand, the plasticizing effect of the SRAs can be used to decrease the water content without sacrificing the workability while compensating for the loss in mechanical response. More importantly, the long-term behavior of the concrete improves significantly, especially under drying conditions. Drying shrinkage and drying creep are all considerably decreased due to the SRA incorporation. The autogenous shrinkage is also reduced with some swelling and the basic creep is unaltered. lt appears that the SRA has a promising future in concrete technology since it provides a rational method for controlling the long-teim stability, which can lead to benefits in crack control and serviceability.
