Moznosti uporabe odpadkov v gradbenistvu in industriji gradbenih materialov
If waste materials can be re-used, then two goals can be attained: demands on natural resources for the materials to produce a new product are reduced, as is the need for landfilling. This paper presents some ways of re-using waste materials in the production of construction materials which have been investigated and found viable on the basis of research conducted at the Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute. The suitability of electric arc furnace (EAF) cyclone dust derived from the metalworking industry as a stabilising material for loose materials of low dynamic quality was investigated. It was found that the addition of cyclone dust significantly improved the dynamic properties of such mixtures. The possible use of steel slag, which is comparable to igneous rocks in terms of its mechanical properties, is the discussed. Steel slag can be used in very demanding applications, e.g., in road construction. Conventional aggregate produced from virgin materials can also be replaced by recycled rubble-based aggregates, and water which has been recycled in the production of concrete can be used as a mixing water. The properties of concrete prepared using these recycled constituent materials were compared to the properties of reference concrete that contained no recycled components. The results of the tests showed that the substitution of fine aggregate by recycled material has a strong influence on the properties of the concrete. Sawdust, paper and wood sludge can be used in the production of clay products. Their presence in the raw material results in the increased porosity of the product, so that its thermal insulation properties are enhanced. Drying shrinkage, and the cracks associated with such shrinkage, decreases if paper sludge or sawdust is added. Using various additives, waste produced in the polymer industry can be transformed into materials that can be adapted to the different requirements of various building products.
