Micro analytical investgations on the effect of polypropylene fibres in fire exposed high-performance concrete (HPC)
The development of cement based materials has reached a permanent upside trend within the former decades. From the point of time, the last step in this development row is high performance concrete (HPC). The concrete recipes have to be developed according to the application case, if the high efficiency and the costs shall be considered together. One aspect which is not sufficiently cleared for such cementitious materials is their spalling behaviour and the fire resistance. One passable way to reduce the spalling on a tolerable mass is the use of plastic fibres, for example polypropylene fibres. However, up to now only phenomenological characterizations exist which back up the positive effects of such fibres with regard to fire-exposed HPC. The paper will give a general survey on the spalling mechanisms due to fire exposure as well as an overview on tests which are focused on micro analytical investigations on the effect of polypropylene fibres in fire-exposed HPC. Therefore, several micro analytical test methods were used, such as DTG, DTA, REM, stereo microscopy and XRD to make it possible to describe the mechanisms of permeability increase within the dense matrix, the pores structure and the interfacial transition zone between matrix, aggregates and fibres.
