Strengthening of openings in one-way reinforced-concrete slabs using carbon fiber-reinforced polymer systems
In this study, both experimental and analytical results are presented for the case of slabs with openings that are strengthened with carbon FRP (CFRP) systems. The variables investigated included the opening size, opening location, and strengthening schemes. The following conclusions are drawn: CFRP systems provided an effective method to enhance the load-carrying capacity and stiffness of RC slabs with an opening. When the opening size is small, normal flexural failure will control. A new failure pattern, defined as nonorthogonal flexural failure, was observed for slabs with a larger opening size, where failure was initiated by CFRP debonding from a cracked location. At the transverse free edge of the opening, strengthening using orthogonal sheets or strips is not as effective as placing the CFRP reinforcement diagonally to the opening corners. CFRP debonding was observed as prevailing failure mode, and an effective anchorage system is recommended.
