Adhesively bonded and translulcent glass fiber reinforced polymer sandwich girders
The concept of the sandwich girders described herein is based on the experiences gained during the 1997 construction of the glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) Pontresina pedestrian bridge as well as the 1999 construction of the GFRP Eyecatcher building. The bridge girders are composed of pultruded GFRP standard structural shapes that are assembled to form trusses. Connections are bolted in one of the spans and adhesively bonded in the other. During the design of the bridge, the disadvantages of the bolted construction method became evident. For the Pontresina Bridge, the use of adhesively bonded connectionsin the second span lead to substantial improvements. The small dimensions of the adhesively bonded connections, however, still had disadvantages. This required the application of supplementary bolts, which insure a compression force on the adhesive zones and act as a backup in case of failure in the adhesive connection. The five-story Eyecatcher building is, at a total height of 15 m, the tallest GFRP building in the world. The primary load-carrying structure is composed of three trapezoidal frames, made of adhesively bonded GFRP pultruded shapes. The joints of the pultruded shapes in the frames are bolted so that the Eyecatcher could be dismantled after a first use as an exhibition building and reassembled at its present location in Basel. In order to better understand the load-carrying behavior of sandwich structures with adhesively bonded pultruded shapes, two girders were constructed and investigated experimentally and analytically.
