Facade coatings with an improved water vapour permeability have been developed. They exhibit a low film tension and a lower polymer emulsion content. The coating offers a porous structure and therefore is diffusionable. Unfortunately the water absorption increases. To reach an additional water protection special emulsified silicone resins have to be added. The resulting silicone resin emulsion paints combine both properties, water resistance and water vapour permeability. This is the most effective protection for buildings. There are several parameter in a formulation that influence a coating's quality. PVC and type of polymer emulsion are expected to have a dominant effect. It has been found that high PVC masonry coatings offer a lower dirt pick-up than paints at PVC 60 or lower. Only porous PVC-coatings are breathable and show sufficient water vapour transmission. High PVC coatings also can prove an excellent low water absorption when silicone resin emulsions are added. Besides the influence on water absorption, the type of hydrophobing agent can strongly affect the dirt pick-up tendency.
