Moment resistance of bolted beam to column connections with four bolts in each row
In prEN 1993-1-8 the design of moment resistance beam to column connections with two bolts in each row is based on the component method. In Germany beam to column connections with four bolts in each row are frequently used. For this type of connection, no design rules are given in prEn 1993-1-8. In Germany two design methods can be used to calculate beam to column connections with four bolts in each row. One design method is presented in 'Bemessungshilfen für profilorientiertes Konstruieren', which was worked out by Oberegge. The second design method, developed on the basis of the component method according to prEN 1993-1-8 is presented in 'Typisierte Anschlüsse im Stahlhochbau'. The calculated load bearing capacities of both methods differ significantly, the prEN based method being the more conservative one. Tests were enforced in 2003 at the Institute of Steel Constructions at the University of Dortmund. The results of this test series show, that both design methods provide safe resistances. The aim of this paper is to introduce both design methods and give a validation based on a comparison with these test results.
