Nondestructive evaluation of FRP wrapped concrete columns and bridges
To increase strength or remedy a structural failure in concrete bridges or columns, tension-carrying materials, such as Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites, are being used as overwraps. The increase in strength offered by these overwraps is dependent on proper bonding between the FRP and the concrete structure. It is therefore critical that defects present at the interface, or within the composite, are detected in order to maintain the structural integrity. Conventional Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) techniques are difficult to apply on FRP materials due to anisotropic material properties. To meet this challenge, Physical Acoustics Corporation (PAC) has designed and constructed a field-portable, battery powered, inspection system, based on low frequency acoustic guided waves, for the NDE of FRP retrofitted concrete structures. This paper discusses the successful use of this technology for inspection of FRP wrapped concrete structures. C-scan images are produced identifying areas of delaminations, debonds or other defects using the processed RF waveforms. This prototype system allows field engineers to carry on the inspection using a hand-held system based on a pocket computer platform, with a newly developed probe, equipped with acoustic rolling sensors, and mechanical encoders for position tracking.
