Synopsis of comprehensive non-destructive evaluation of 9 bridge decks on I-84 interchange in Connecticut using ground penetrating radar and ultrasonic-seismic (SASW/impact-echo) analysis
Nine asphalt-overlaid bridge decks were surveyed at 3Omph using a dual-polarization ground penetrating radar survey to estimate concrete deterioration quantities (% of deck area) caused by corrosion of the reinforcing steel. Three of the four interstate decks (out of the nine) were also surveyed at limited locations using ultrasonic-seismic (SASW/impact-echo) equipment. The extent of delamination within the decks at those locations was determined. A portable seismic pavement analyzer (PSPA) was used for the ultrasonic-seismic assessment. Correlation with the GPR data at those locations helped define a suitable deterioration threshold separating sound from deteriorated concrete within the deck. These two non-destructive evaluation techniques, along with 15 cores and 15 chloride samples from the three decks, were used to finalize the deterioration assessment. For two of the three interstate decks tested, the PSPA testing and analysis was useful in helping establish the GPR deterioration threshold. On the third no obvious correlation could be seen, so the chloride test results were used to help constrain the GPR data. From the limited testing on these three decks, some inferences regarding the condition state of the remaining six decks in the study were made. In all cases, however, visual underside deck inspection data helped guide the analysis. The text of the paper provides the essential thrust of the analysis conducted, though many details with respect to a study this comprehensive cannot be fully explained in a brief report. The most important conclusions are presented and discussed, and only a single map for one of the decks is used to illustrate the process. Hence, the reader is strongly urged to contact the primary author if more information or detail is desired.
