Optical spectroscopy for detection of moisture ingress in civil infrastructure materials
Research at Polytechnic University's optical diagnostics laboratory is focused on the early detection of degradation in civil infrastructure. This research focuses on real-time distributed monitoring of the agents and products of materials deterioration. The potential of integration of functional polymers and optical wave-guides as tools for degradation monitoring will be discussed. In such hybrid sensing systems, analyte recognition is carried out through the selection process inherent within the polymers, and the transduction is carried out by the guided electromagnetic radiation which is spectrally modulated according to the level of the target analyte species present.
