New level of fire performance for data cables
The requirements for the fire performance of communications cable depend upon its installation. For example, communications cables used in air handling plenum spaces have to meet the requirements NFPA 90A standard. This provides the potential of either meeting the requirements for plenum materials defined as limited combustible, or meeting the exception requirements for the cable using NFPA 262 test method. In this paper, data are presented for high fire performance cables that meet the primary requirements for materials installed in air handling plenum. The test plan was designed to show the relative performance of accumulated cables, and performance in conduits. The results showed that both LCC and CMP cables tested in bundles have non-propagating fire profiles. However, the LCC cables also have a significantly lower smoke profile and would meet the requirements for limited combustible materials used in air handling plenums. When the cables were tested in conduits, all the cables had negligible Flame Spread Index. The LCC cable is referred to as Limited Combustible Cable and is now listed by Underwriters Laboratories Inc.
