Novel solvent-free polyurethane dispersions for wood coating
Coatings are important for the protection of wood and can contribute to improved aesthetic appearance. Concerns about emissions of volatile organic compounds along with stricter legislation on VOCs have led to an increased focus on water based technology for these coatings applications. In this study the authors investigated polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) made by a novel continuous high shear dispersion process which allows not only solvent free production of polyurethane dispersions, but also a wider variability of polymer structures. The process to make solvent free PUDs along with the advantages to use these PUDs in hard solvent free wood coatings will be the topic of the discussion. The drying behavior early and final hardness development and solvent / stain resistance of high gloss formulations without the use of solvents, crosslinkers or volatile neutralizing amines will be shown.
