Determination of moisture diffusivity using the time domain reflectometry (TDR) method
The time domain reflectometry (TDR) method is commonly used for the measurement of moisture content in soil science. In contrast to most methods used for the determination of moisture content, the TDR method does not require calibration for every material. The TDR probe calibration can be carried out in advance all at once for every single probe. Another advantage of the TDR method is that it is suitable for materials with higher salinity, where an application of methods such as the resistance method or capacitance method is impaired by a significant loss of accuracy. The field version of TDR makes it possible to determine the moisture content in situ, directly on a building site. Contrary to the common gravimetric method, TDR allows a continuous long-term non-destructive monitoring of moisture content in constructions. In this study, the method is employed for the measurement of moisture profiles in building materials. The practical applications of the method are presented on an example of water penetration into cellular concrete (aerated autoclaved concrete) samples. The measured results are then used for the determination of moisture diffusivity as a function of moisture content.
