Development and application of a corrosion resistant low alloy steel for fuel gas pipelines at Rourkela Steel Plant
A new CRLA (corrosion resistant low alloy) steel with low carbon has been developed for fabrication of pipelines for transportation of fuel gases from coke ovens, blast furnaces and BOF/LD (basic oxygen furnaces) as well as the mixed gases to various consumer shops at the RSP (Rourkela Steel Plant) of Steel Authority of India Limited. The service life of normal IS:2062/IS:5504-1969 mild steel fuel gas pipelines is 4 - 7 years depending on the corrosivity of fuel gases. The CRLA steel was found to be 5 times more corrosion resistant than the conventional IS:2062 plain carbon pipeline steel in a highly corrosive synthetic ammoniacal coke oven gas condensate under controlled laboratory conditions. The corrosion resistance of CRLA steel samples in different gas condensate media, obtained from RSP, was also found to be much superior to the conventional pipeline steel. The mechanical property requirements as per stipulations of relevant IS standards were fully satisfied. Around 2 kilometres of 36/54/64 inch diameter pipelines were successfully installed and commissioned at the Rourkela Steel Plant.
