Safety aspect concerning grinding plants with stirred media mills
In most cases running stirred media mills is without risks concerning combustion. This is because of in most cases water is used as fluid phase. Nevertheless in some cases organic solvents have to be used. Then additional measures have to be done to prevent the solvent from ignition. This article gives a brief overview concerning the risks and possible measures in order to get a safe process with stirred media mills. The main risk running a stirred media mill with hazardous materials is the combustion of the solvent. Three factors have to concur so that a self-ignition can take place: a highly flammable material, oxygen, an ignition spark. As an example it will be explained which actions have been implemented in order to run a stirred media mill with a high combustible media. In the example a catalyst was to be milled. Because the catalyst reacts with water as solvent toluene was to be used. Toluene is a non-conductive liquid and high combustible. The mill was driven in passage. Running stirred media mills with high combustible media safety aspects become important. Besides the combustible atmosphere also electrostatic charge has to be avoided. Electrostatic charge does occur when materials are separated that were in contact before. This applies also to liquids if they have only a low conductivity. In the example a save operation was ensured by installing all necessary bondings and earthings and keeping in mind the risks of filling and discharging the vessels.
