Enhancement of steel bridges by weld improvement methods
Research has been initiated on the application of weld improvement methods to increase the fatigue life of new and existing steel bridges. Studies analysed the effects of different mechanical weld improvement methods on the fatigue strength of virgin and preloaded specimens. The effects of UIT (Ultrasonic Impact Treatment) on butt-, fillet- and longitudinal welds have been compared. The results obtained out of the running tests show that the improvement method produces very good results. The positive effects could be proved for plates with a thickness of 8 mm and 30 mm of steel grade S355J2G3 as well as for S460TM. SN-curves for treated notch details are the basis for the implementation of new methods in the design codes for the repair of existing bridges or the design of new bridges. Results show that the curves for treated specimens run flatter, so that the fatigue strength increases or the fatigue life for low load levels will be raised further more. The investigations demonstrate that UIT is an effective and practical means to improve the service life of bridges, to increase their fatigue strength and last but not least for repair procedures. Further investigations will be carried out in order to derive reliable SN-curves even for high strength steels
