Integrated blast and fire analysis of steel structures
Extreme loads arising from terrorist acts have become a major threat to building safety. Some of them take the form of blast followed by fire and may cause severe damage to buildings. The importance of performing an integrated blast and fire analysis is discussed.The effect of blast on the fire resistance is addressed. Dynamic analysis methodologies using implicit and explicit schemes for assessing the effects of blast and fire are presented. A typical multi-storey steel building is analyzed for its response when subjected to a medium-scale explosion and then followed by fire. It is demonstrated that this building does not have adequate resistance when it is subject to the combined action of blast and fire.
