Dynamic viscoelastic characterization of bitumen/polymer roofing membranes
Dynamic viscoelastic functions of bitumen/polymer waterproofing membranes are investigated. Analyses of the effect of polymer concentration on the height of the loss tangent peak observed around 20 C reveals the existence of a continuous polymer phase. The variation of the elastic modulus and the loss modulus with frequency leads to define a Relaxation Spectrum Index which is used to determine the polymer concentration for the phase inversion. This is related to the Spanish UNE 104281 technical norm on bitumen/polymer blends for roofing. The results of the elastic modulus as a function of temperature and frequency were employed to evaluate the bonding capacity of the membranes to the roof surface. New perspectives on the characterization of bitumen/polymer membranes, similar to the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) used in road pavement, are open.
