Rapid gravity sand filters: Developments in filter floor design
The performance of potable water filters in suspended solids removal is crucially dependent upon the design of the filter underdrain and the support for the filter medium. Total media cleaning is the key requirement for a rapid gravity filter to function effectively and efficiently under all loading conditions. There are different designs for underdrains - important when removing suspended solids from potable water. This review points out some recent developments with special regard to the 'dual parallel lateral underdrain'. This filter is a modular block type underdrain that provides users with several benefits including its ease of installation, evenness of distribution, more compact filter design and improved operator safety.
