Flammability of lightweight, flexible insulating nonwoven made from natural fibrous raw materials
Insulation non-woven made from natural raw materials can be classified in the group of environmental friendly materials for, first of all, thermal and acoustic insulation of family houses and bungalows where more and more attention is paid to selection of materials according their effect on human health. The paper discusses characteristic properties of lightweight thermal insulation materials made from natural raw materials as compared to dimilar chemical materials used in construction. The types of raw materials used for manufacture insulation non-woven (wool, hemp, flax) have been listed. The performance and coefficients of properties for these materials, having effect on microclimate (hygroscopicity, ability to eliminate electrostatic charges) have been presented. Further, the method to increase the resistance of plant fibers (flax, hemp) to fire using the treatment developed at the INF has been discussed. Application of insulating fiber manufacture methods has been presented. The results of flammability tests, thermal and acoustic properties and other biophysical tests confirming the product comfort have been presented. The examples of application directions of discussed insulation non-woven in building industry have been presented e.g. for thermal and acoustic insulation of attics.
