The possibilities of acoustic emission testing of rails during exploitation
The possibilities of acoustic emission testing of rails on a bridge are considered. The stress-strain state of a rail under conditions of train loading is analyzed. The problems of minimization of levels of mechanical and electromagnetic noises are considered. As a result of the performed studies, the fundamental possibility of AE rail diagnostics on a bridge has been proved and the main requirements for the AE testing technique have been developed. In particular, it has been shown that the stress-strain state caused by the weight of a passing train is enough for AE testing of rails laid on a bridge; the character of acoustic and electromagnetic noises has been studied and ways of noise suppression have been found. It has been shown that the AE diagnostics of a rail is possible immediately before a train drives on a rail and after it leaves the rail. Developing flaws in the welded joints of rails undetected by a russian flaw detector were detected by AE testing. The developed method was patented by the authors, and the technique was applied for diagnosing rails over the Ob River.
