Non-Destructive Testing of masonry arch bridges - an overview
To establish reliable input data for the assessment of masonry arch bridges the application of effective inspection and measuring methods are needed. In order to minimise damage to the structure destructive testing methods should be complemented and replaced by NDT methods wherever possible. Unlike conventional destructive testing NDT methods can provide mainly overall qualitative information on the structure. The results of the performed test programme have confirmed that NDT is a promising tool in confirming unknown geometrical data and finding hidden characteristics of masonry structures such as the presence of internal voids, flaws, layering condition, mapping of non-homogeneity, moisture content, etc. which may otherwise be detected only by destructive or other complicated tests. However a great deal of further research is needed to increase the reliability of the interpretation of NDT results.
