Phosphorus based flame retardants for transparent lacquers
Liquid organic phosphorous compounds play an important role as flame retardant on the market. According to various fire tests their effect was proven. Since there are more and more regulations on fire safety, manufacturers of paints and lacquers are looking for flame retardants. Now it is possible to modify transparent lacquers with liquid, phosphorous based flame retardants without loosing their brilliance and transparency. Phosphorous based liquid flame retardants show a very good effect and most of them are not under the VOC Solvents Directive. A higher flame retardant effect could be achieved by addition of special, finely ground, dispersed additives. This is an attribute of the synergism between compact additives and liquid flame retardants. This effect was proven in many trials. Phosphorous based flame retardants are suitable for Epoxy and PUR Lacquers. The main goal was that the lacquers still remain transparent and don't loose their brilliance. The mechanical influence of the lacquer with about 10% flame retardant is insignificant. A combination of liquid and solid flame retardant was tested and a synergism of both could be proven. If the concentration of the liquid flame retardant is not high enough it is possible to increase it with additives like Ammonium polyphosphate, Aluminium oxide and Bayfomox WMP calculated on the binder. With the liquid flame retardant it is possible to reduce or just to substitute the solid flame retardant. With this substitution the authors get better light fastness, light lacquers, low temperature properties and easier induction of the flame retardant.
