Properties of bauxite-mullite castables and corrosion resistance to cement clinker
Properties of bauxite-mullite castables bonded by calcium aluminate cement were discussed. Effects of andalusite on mechanical properties, thermal shock resistance are evaluated. Corrosion behavior of castables in a cement clinker with CaO/SiO2 weight ratio = 3.3 were investigated after 3 h at 1500 deg C using a crucible test. Apparent porosity of sample, fired at 110 deg C, is lower than those fired at 1100 deg C and 1500 deg C and decreases slightly with increasing of andalusite. Modulus of rupture and cold crushing strength also decrease with increasing of andalusite. The experimental results also indicated that thermal shock resistance of castables is improved due to volume expansion of andalusite's decomposition. Increase of permanent linear change of samples fired at 1500 deg C with andalusite content is also attributed to volume expansion of andalusite's decomposition. Clinker test results indicated that andalusite has no obvious effect on penetration. Clinker penetrates along boundaries of bauxite or mullite. Al2O3 from bauxite dissolve into clinker to form CA6, spinel, anorthite and gehlenite and other low melting phases which precipitate during cooling. Bauxite absorbs CaO from the clinker to form anorthite. CA6 and spinel lessen the penetration and anorthite and gehlenite prompt the penetration.
