Waterproofing of concrete bridge decks actual Austrian systems and European development
In Austria, waterproofing systems of concrete bridge decks based on bitumen sheets are used since the early sixties of the 20th century. The development of polymer modifiers gave the input for a new generation of elastomeric and plastomeric bitumen sheets. As in the most fields of construction materials, also on the field of waterproofing of bridges European standards and ETAGs are developed. In CEN/TC 254 WG 6 test standards for bituminous waterproofing sheets and systems have been worked out. The application of these mostly new methods will lead to difficulties as there are only few experiences in relation to behaviour under traffic and climatic conditions.
