Detection of fatigue cracks in steel bridge details
One of the critical degradation mechanisms in steel bridges is metal fatigue cracking and the resulting deterioration. The U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Center is currently leading a research program to facilitate the development and field deployment of NDE technologies capable of detecting surface or subsurface cracks including growing cracks at fatigue prone details in steel bridges. In this program, a solicitation for commercial and developmental crack detection technologies will be conducted and the potential technologies will be evaluated through laboratory and field testing. The FHWA overall goal is to develop an informational database of current and state-of-the-art, developmental, and prototypical technologies and their associated capabilities for use by the bridge community.
