Ventilating facades
Some of the significant factors associated with the implementation of double skin facade (DSF), parameters to optimize their performance, and associated benefits and risks are discussed. The DSF or ventilated facade or active curtain wall need to be used when design constraints exist like high percentage of glazing area, no-external shades, transparent glass choices, or a facade material requires protection from the elements. The design of DSF requires proper evaluation of geometric parameters, glass selection, ventilation strategy, shading, and passive or active control strategies. The height of DSF cavity can vary up to single story, several stories, or the height of the whole building. The depth of the cavity can be determined using parameters like types of shading devices/blinds, access to the cavity for cleaning, and the ventilation strategy including arrangement and flow rates.
