Energy and environmental benefits of insulating commercial buildings with polyiso
This preliminary study demonstrates that use of polyiso insulation yields energy savings and Global Warming Potential (GWP) reductions that far outweigh energy used and global warming emissions generated during all other life cycle phases. Moreover, the analysis shows the value of increasing the level of polyiso insulation beyond building codes. In addition to energy and environmental benefits, there are financial advantages from cost savings over the insulation life. Recognized technical tools are used in the analysis, as the study combines life cycle principles contained in ISO 14040 with rigorous building energy simulation modeling. The system boundary includes the embodied energy and GWP of materials and activities from extraction through manufacture, processing, installation, use and end-of-life. Building energy consumption is modeled based on an integrated whole building approach, with ASHRAE 90.1 standards and Appendix G: Performance Rating Method procedures, applied to the design of a commercial building under various insulation scenarios. The results of this study support continued and more extensive use of polyiso insulation in commercial buildings, as the energy, environmental and financial benefits are substantial.
